An avatar can make an interview feel conversational, but the purchasing question is what happens after the candidate answers. Does the next question explore a useful detail, and can a recruiter trace the final finding back to the conversation?

Separate the products before comparing them
Interviewer.AI describes asynchronous video interviews, conversational avatar-led interviews, admissions interviews and mock interviews. Those are different buying contexts. Its employer-selection product should be compared with StepUp’s company product, not with private candidate rehearsal.
StepUp Company Interview uses job and CV context, an editable role rubric and follow-ups connected to the candidate’s answers. Recruiters review findings, transcript evidence and coverage. StepUp also offers a separate work-situation assessment.
The useful comparison is therefore not “avatar versus no avatar.” It is interview format, follow-up quality, evidence review and candidate experience. A visual presenter by itself tells you little about assessment quality.
A buyer’s comparison worksheet
| Dimension | What to ask both vendors to show |
|---|---|
| Context | How the job requirements influence the questions |
| Follow-ups | An example linked to the candidate’s actual answer |
| Coverage | Which criteria were explored and which were not |
| Review | The answer behind each important conclusion |
| Candidate experience | Instructions, recovery and alternative arrangements |
Interviewer.AI is worth investigating when avatar-led or asynchronous video formats are part of your requirements. StepUp is worth investigating when you want to explore a CV-based conversation and inspect the resulting recruiter evidence. This does not establish that either vendor lacks the other’s capabilities.
Worked scenario: a customer-success renewal
Use a fictional candidate who says, “I saved an account after a service outage.” The relevant role requires diagnosis, expectation-setting and coordination across teams.
Ask the vendor to show how the interview distinguishes personal contribution from a team outcome. A useful follow-up might explore what the candidate checked, which options they considered or how they communicated uncertainty. A generic request for “more detail” may produce a longer answer without resolving the important question.
Then inspect the report. Does it identify the account outcome as self-reported? Can the reviewer find the evidence for the candidate’s decision? Does it avoid assuming that a smooth delivery proves commercial judgement?
Run the exercise with two fictional answers: one confident but vague, and one less polished but specific. Your goal is not to force identical scores. It is to understand which evidence drove the conclusions and whether reviewers can challenge them.
The example is a procurement exercise, not a published performance benchmark.
Candidate access matters
Before choosing a format, ask what equipment, permissions and connection quality it needs. Establish an alternative for candidates who cannot use the default route. Review what is recorded, who can see it and how long it is retained.
Do not equate a candidate’s camera setting, background or speaking style with job competence. Ask what the system evaluates and what it explicitly does not evaluate. Obtain the supporting documentation rather than relying on broad fairness language.
Pricing and product scope
For Interviewer.AI, confirm which hiring product the quote covers and whether asynchronous and conversational formats have separate limits. For StepUp, request company-specific terms and confirm whether you need Interview, Assessment or both.

Does an avatar make an interview more accurate? This comparison provides no evidence for that claim. Evaluate the questions and reviewable evidence.
Can private practice scores be used as hiring scores? They serve different purposes. Keep candidate preparation separate from employer selection.
