An interview tool can be useful on its own and still be the wrong purchase for a team replacing scheduling, assessment and video interviewing together. That is the central question in a StepUpCareer versus HireVue evaluation: are you buying a focused first round or a broader hiring workflow?

Publisher disclosure: StepUpCareer publishes this article. It is a source-based comparison, not independent testing, a numerical ranking or a claim that StepUp is universally better. Sources checked 26 October 2026.

What the products describe

HireVue’s platform describes video interviewing, assessments, scheduling, candidate engagement and ATS integrations. A buyer should evaluate the modules being offered, not assume every feature on the website is included in one package.

StepUp’s company offering presents two distinct tools. Company Interview explores experience using a job description, candidate-confirmed CV, editable criteria and answer-linked follow-ups. Company Assessment uses short work situations. Recruiters review evidence and make their own decisions.

StepUp’s public walkthrough is relevant when you want to see how a first-round answer connects to a report. It is not proof of feature parity with HireVue’s wider platform, and this comparison does not establish integration, enterprise-security or deployment equivalence.

Compare the workflow, not just the interview screen

StageQuestion for your evaluation
InvitationWho initiates it, and how are candidate details checked?
InterviewIs it recorded, conversational, live, asynchronous or a combination?
SchedulingWhat happens if the candidate needs to reschedule or use another format?
AssessmentWhich evidence and scoring rules are available to reviewers?
HandoffWhich ATS record receives the result, and what happens if syncing fails?

The value of a broader suite may lie in connecting these stages. The value of a focused tool may lie in making one stage easier to inspect. Neither can be established from a feature count.

Worked evaluation: a graduate recruitment programme

Imagine a fictional employer hiring graduates across finance, operations and customer support. The team wants consistent first-round evidence but already has an ATS and scheduling process.

Start by writing the boundary: “We are replacing first-round evidence collection, not our entire hiring system.” Give each vendor one role description and a fictional CV. Ask for the candidate invitation, completed interview evidence, recruiter view and an example of a failed or interrupted attempt.

Have two reviewers independently assess whether the report distinguishes missing evidence from poor performance. If one reviewer cannot find the answer behind a conclusion, record that as an unresolved review requirement. Do not hide it inside an overall satisfaction score.

Next, repeat the exercise assuming the team also needs scheduling and assessment modules. This may change the shortlist. A procurement decision that made sense for one stage may not be the best fit for a larger replacement.

Record the following in the procurement worksheet:

  1. Existing system that remains in place.
  2. Stage being replaced.
  3. Data required at the handoff.
  4. Responsible person when the handoff fails.
  5. Candidate support and accommodation route.
  6. Evidence needed before moving someone forward.

This is a proposed evaluation, not a customer result or a test conducted for this article.

Where StepUp may fit—and where HireVue may fit

Consider StepUp when the priority is a CV-informed company interview or a separate work-situation assessment with recruiter review. Its public examples let a buyer inspect those concepts before requesting access.

Consider HireVue’s broader platform when your purchase includes several recruitment stages. Verify the proposed modules and integrations against your existing systems. We have not measured either vendor’s completion rates, hiring quality or support performance.

Compare commercial terms fairly

Ask for a quote tied to the same candidate volume, modules, reviewer access and contract period. Include implementation, support, data retention and integration responsibilities. StepUp’s company pricing is discussed through an enquiry; consumer voice allowances are not a valid comparator.

Is StepUp cheaper? No comparable quotes were obtained, so this article makes no price-superiority claim.

Should a high AI score trigger automatic hiring? The employer must retain accountable review. Inspect evidence, role relevance and unresolved questions rather than treating a score as the decision.
